Iona Dominates at Home in 26-Point Thrashing of Canisius
The Hynes Athletics Center was electric on Tuesday night as the Iona Gaels hosted their conference rivals, the Canisius Golden Griffins. The home team did not disappoint, cruising to a 74-48 victory that showcased their dominance.
From the onset, it was clear that this would be an evening of one-sided basketball. At halftime, the Gaels led by a margin of five points, 30-25, but it wasn't long before Iona pulled away. The final margin ended up being 26 points, with the largest lead reaching as high as 29 points in the third quarter.
Denver Anglin was instrumental in Iona's victory, scoring 14 points on 4-of-7 three-point attempts (50.0% FG). Lamin Sabally chipped in with 13 rebounds and six points, while CJ Anthony dished out six assists to complement his 12 points. The collective effort from the Gaels' starting lineup was too much for Canisius to overcome.
For the Golden Griffins, Mike Evbagharu led the charge with 10 points on 50.0% shooting. He also contributed six rebounds and one assist. However, Canisius struggled overall, making just 18 of 61 field goal attempts (30.0%) and committing six turnovers to Iona's 13.
Iona's balanced attack and crisp team play were the decisive factors in their victory. The Gaels' eFG% was a respectable 65.7%, while Canisius struggled at 34.4%. This performance showcased Iona's ability to execute on both ends of the floor, while Canisius was unable to find its footing.
As the conference season heats up, this win will be significant for Iona, who remain in contention for a high ranking.
