Furman Edges Charleston So in Thrilling Comeback Victory
In a back-and-forth contest, Furman University's home team rallied from a one-point deficit at halftime to defeat visiting Charleston Southern University 84-76 on Monday night.
The Paladins, led by 25 points and six three-pointers from Asa Thomas, took the lead for good midway through the second half. Furman outscored Charleston So 19-4 in the final 10 minutes of play to build a comfortable eight-point cushion.
For the game, Furman shot 44% from the field, including 40% on three-point attempts, while holding Charleston So to just 43%. The Paladins also dominated the glass, grabbing 41 rebounds, including 24 by Alex Wilkins, who added 24 points and four assists.
Charleston So's A'lahn Sumler led all scorers with 26 points, but was limited to a 55% shooting night from the field. Luke Williams chipped in with seven assists for the Buccaneers.
The game saw both teams struggle from beyond the arc, with Furman making just three of its nine attempts and Charleston So converting two of its eight shots. However, the Paladins' hot three-point shooting early on helped them build an early lead, which they held onto until halftime.
In the second half, Furman's bench played a crucial role in the comeback. The Paladin reserves scored 19 points to help seal the win for their team.
Furman's victory marked its first win at home this season and improved its record to 8-3 overall. Charleston So fell to 6-5 on the year.
