Mercer defeats Wofford 109-97
Mercer Dominates at Home: 109-97 Over Wofford in Conference Showdown
In a battle of conference foes, Mercer proved its home-court advantage was no illusion, routing visiting Wofford 109-97 on Saturday night at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer's convincing victory marked the team's first win over Wofford this season and served as a much-needed confidence booster for the Bears. The team's strong performance was spearheaded by the impressive play of Baraka Okojie, who led the way with 29 points, 12 assists, and 2 rebounds.
The home team took control early, leading by as many as 17 in the third quarter. Despite Wofford's late surge, Mercer's defense proved too much to overcome, holding the Terriers to just 47% shooting from the field. Armani Mighty contributed mightily on the glass with 11 rebounds and 17 points.
Nils Machowski led all scorers for Wofford with 33 points, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit Mercer had established. Kahmare Holmes chipped in with 22 points, but his efforts were not enough to secure a road victory.
Mercer's balanced attack allowed the team to outlast its opponent, finishing with a strong 109-97 win. The game set the tone for what promises to be an exciting conference season, as both teams look to build momentum and move up the standings.
In a closely watched matchup, Mercer emerged victorious behind strong all-around play from Okojie.
