Lipscomb defeats North Florida 82-74
North Florida Falls Short at Lipscomb
In a tightly contested conference matchup, the University of Tennessee at Martin (North Florida) traveled to Allen Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, where they faced off against the Bisons of Lipscomb University. Despite a valiant effort from the Ospreys, they ultimately fell short, 82-74.
The first half saw both teams trade baskets, with Lipscomb's Grant Asman and North Florida's Dalton Gayman leading their respective teams in scoring. However, it was the home team that took an early lead, outscoring North Florida by seven points at halftime (38-35).
As the game wore on, Lipscomb continued to pull away, expanding their advantage to as many as 14 points in the second half. The Ospreys refused to go quietly, however, and managed to cut the deficit down to 12 points with just under a minute remaining.
In the end, it was not enough. North Florida's Kamrin Oriol hit a three-pointer on a desperation attempt, but Lipscomb's Titas Sargiunas sealed the victory for his team with two free throws of his own.
Sargiunas led all scorers with 19 points, hitting 3-5 from beyond the arc and shooting 70.0% from the field. Asman added 15 rebounds, while Mateo Esmeraldo chipped in with eight assists.
For North Florida, Kent Jackson led the way with 19 points on 5-9 three-point shooting. Oriol also had a strong all-around performance, notching four assists and 19 points despite struggling from the field (50.0%).
The game's advanced statistics told a similar story to the box score. Lipscomb's effective field goal percentage was slightly higher than North Florida's, while the Bison's free throw rate was significantly lower.
Despite the loss, North Florida's Kent Jackson praised his team's effort. "We just couldn't get over the hump," he said. "Lipscomb played a great game and deserved the win."
The Bison's victory marked their third straight win in conference play. With several ranked teams still to come, this one could prove to be a crucial turning point in the Bisons' season.
For now, Lipscomb will bask in the glory of their hard-fought victory. Asman summed up the team's mood: "We worked together as a unit and got the job done."
