Gonzaga defeats Campbell 98-70
Campbell Falls Short in Dominating Fashion Against Gonzaga
The Zags proved once again why they're one of the top teams in the country, as Gonzaga thrashed visiting Campbell 98-70 on Friday night at McCarthey Athletic Center.
Gonzaga's statement win was a showcase of their dominance from start to finish. The Bulldogs took an early lead and never looked back, building a 28-point cushion by halftime that only grew larger from there. Campbell, which came into the game with a strong preseason ranking, showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately couldn't keep up with Gonzaga's pace.
The key storyline was indeed the blowout, as Gonzaga outscored Campbell 43-36 in the first half and never looked back. The difference in field goal percentages between the two teams was staggering, with Gonzaga shooting 58% to Campbell's 40%.
For the Bulldogs, Braden Huff led the way with 37 points on an efficient 88.9% shooting night from the field, while Graham Ike chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Campbell, meanwhile, struggled to find its rhythm behind the arc, going just 0-3 from three-point range. DJ Smith was the team's lone bright spot, scoring 18 points on 53.3% shooting.
In terms of advanced statistics, Gonzaga's eFG% was a whopping 61.4%, while Campbell's fell to 43.7%. The Bulldogs also outrebounded their opponents by 12, demonstrating their trademark physicality and rebounding prowess.
The loss is a setback for Campbell, which now faces an uphill climb in the conference standings. Gonzaga, on the other hand, moves one step closer to another deep postseason run.
