In a statement win, the Richmond Spiders cruised to an 80-56 victory over the visiting The Citadel Bulldogs at Robins Center on Saturday night.
The home team took control early, leading 42-32 at halftime and never looking back. As the game wore on, the Spiders' lead only grew larger, with Richmond holding a 26-point advantage at one point in the second half.
For Richmond, Jaden Daughtry led the way with 17 points, shooting 77.8% from the field and providing a spark off the bench. Jonathan Beagle chipped in with seven rebounds and three assists, while Mike Walz added 14 points and five rebounds to help his team control the tempo.
The Citadel's Logan Applegate was the only Bulldogs player to reach double figures, scoring 10 points despite struggling from beyond the arc (1-4). Sola Adebisi led The Citadel with six rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Spiders' dominant performance.
Richmond's balanced attack and stifling defense were on full display, as they shot 52.0% from the field and held The Citadel to just 40.0%. The Spiders also outrebounded their opponents by five, with Richmond grabbing 34 boards to The Citadel's 32.
The win is a significant statement for Richmond, which has been seeking to prove itself in the non-conference season. With the victory, they've shown that they're capable of competing against top-level opponents and emerging victorious.
For The Citadel, the loss serves as a reminder that it still needs to work on its offense, particularly from beyond the arc. Despite the Bulldogs' valiant effort, they were unable to overcome Richmond's defensive dominance and fell victim to a 24-point blowout.
The Spiders will look to build on this momentum heading into their next matchup, while The Citadel will seek to regroup and refocus after a tough loss.
