Winthrop Visits Longwood, but Can't Contain Pioneers' High-Scoring Attack
A 12-Point Thrill in the Joan Perry Brock Center
In a conference matchup that lived up to its billing, the Longwood Pioneers welcomed the Winthrop Eagles to their home turf on New Year's Eve. While the visitors from South Carolina came close, they ultimately fell short against the energetic and well-coordinated Pioneers.
The game began with an even split in points through the first 20 minutes of play: 38-29 for Longwood and 41-29 for Winthrop.
However, it was Longwood that took control of the tempo and pace of the contest by pulling away to a 13-point advantage at one point. This led to a dominating final score of 82-70 in favor of the Pioneers.
Redd Thompson Jr. led all scorers with an impressive 15 points off his 2-5 three-point shooting display, as well as Elijah Tucker's nine rebounds and Jacoi Hutchinson's three assists.
Winthrop's Logan Duncomb scored 31 points, grabbing 13 rebounds along the way. His dominant performance was complemented by Daylen Berry's four assists.
Longwood displayed a strong team effort, with multiple players contributing to their offensive and defensive success. The Pioneers shot 52% from the field, including 39% on three-point attempts, while Winthrop struggled at 32%.
Winthrop rebounded well on both ends of the floor but ultimately couldn't overcome Longwood's balanced attack.
The final margin was a respectable 12 points, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for the visitors. The Pioneers' strong home crowd and superior performance made this a convincing victory at home.
The Pioneers are looking forward to their next conference matchup, while Winthrop will look to bounce back from this tough loss on the road.
