Virginia defeats Maryland 80-72
Virginia Takes Down Maryland 80-72 in Non-Conference Thriller
The University of Virginia men's basketball team proved they're still a force to be reckoned with, taking down visiting Maryland 80-72 at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday night.
For the Cavaliers, Dallin Hall led the charge, pouring in 20 points and contributing six assists to help his team build a strong lead early. Johann Grunloh also had an impressive all-around game, grabbing eight rebounds and adding eight points.
Maryland, meanwhile, struggled from beyond the arc, making just one of seven three-point attempts. The Terps were outrebounded 41-34 by the Cavaliers but still managed to stay in the game with a strong shooting performance from free throw line, where they made 16 of 22 attempts.
In terms of team statistics, Virginia shot 45.0% from the field, including 50.0% on two-pointers and 35.0% on three-pointers. The Cavaliers also dominated the glass, grabbing 34 rebounds, both on offense and defense.
Maryland's David Coit was the Terps' top scorer with 15 points but struggled to find his rhythm from beyond the arc, making just three of seven attempts.
The game was a back-and-forth affair until the second half, when Virginia began to pull away. The Cavaliers led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter and never looked back.
For Maryland, falling short on the road is nothing new, but it's a tough pill to swallow after such a hard-fought game.
