Mount St Marys Edges Loyola MD in Thrilling Non-Conference Showdown
In a back-and-forth affair, the Mount St Marys men's basketball team outlasted host Loyola Maryland 81-73 on Saturday night at Reitz Arena.
As the visiting team, Mount St Marys took control of the game early, building an 11-point lead in the second half that ultimately proved decisive. The largest margin for either side came with 4:30 remaining, when the Mounties held a 68-60 advantage.
The RedHawks (5-1) kept it tight until the final minutes, thanks in part to a strong shooting display from senior guard Jordan Stiemke, who poured in 22 points, including five three-pointers. Emmett Adair contributed seven rebounds and nine points off the bench for Loyola Maryland, which fell to 4-2.
Meanwhile, Mount St Marys's Xavier Lipscomb led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Justin Amadi's 12 markers. Mason So chipped in six assists and three rebounds for the Marauders (6-1).
In terms of team statistics, both squads shot relatively efficiently from the field. The Mounties made 28 of 54 shots from the floor (52.0%), while Loyola Maryland connected on 24 of 65 attempts (37.0%). The RedHawks did hold an edge in rebounding, grabbing 43 boards to the Marauders' 28.
The Mount St Marys win marked a significant test for both teams as they enter more competitive matchups down the road.
