Virginia defeats American 95-51
Virginia Dominates American in Non-Conference Showdown
The Cavaliers made a statement on Tuesday night, cruising to a 95-51 victory over visiting American at the John Paul Jones Arena.
The home team was never threatened, taking control early and staying ahead of the Blue Turkeys from start to finish. At one point, Virginia led by as many as 44 points, making for an uncomfortable evening for the American fans in attendance.
Virginia's dominant performance on both ends of the floor set the tone for the contest, with the Cavaliers' offense clicking at a 62% clip from the field and their defense holding the Blue Turkeys to just 32% shooting. The home team also enjoyed a significant advantage on the glass, outrebounding American by nine.
The largest lead came early in the second half when Virginia built its 44-point cushion with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Cavaliers' victory was not without challenge, however, as American fought to stay within reach for much of the first half.
Despite ultimately falling short, the Blue Turkeys showed flashes of brilliance on offense, particularly from beyond the arc where they shot 23% compared to Virginia's 39%.
Virginia's balanced attack and stifling defense proved too much for American to overcome. The Cavaliers' performance was highlighted by a strong all-around effort, with multiple players contributing across several key statistical categories.
