Georgetown defeats Saint Peter's 76-68
Georgetown Holds Off Saint Peter's in Thrilling 76-68 Win at Home
The Hoyas (0-1) proved that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the nation's capital, edging out visiting Saint Peter's (0-2) 76-68 in their non-conference matchup at Capital One Arena. The win marks Georgetown's first of the season and serves as a much-needed confidence booster for a team looking to bounce back from a tough preseason.
The game was a seesaw affair, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to gain a significant advantage until the Hoyas took control in the second half. At halftime, Saint Peter's trailed 31-29, but Georgetown's Julius Halaifonua scored 11 points in the third quarter to put the Hoyas up by as many as 12.
Saint Peter's tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, with Bryce Eaton scoring 10 points in the period. However, it was not enough to overcome the Hoyas' lead, and Georgetown emerged victorious.
Halaifonua led the way for Georgetown with 22 points on 75% shooting from the field. He also grabbed nine rebounds, showcasing his versatility as a force in the paint. KJ Lewis added five assists and six points off the bench, while also contributing to the Hoyas' strong defensive effort.
For Saint Peter's, Eaton led the way with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists, but struggled from beyond the arc at times.
The advanced statistics support Georgetown's win, with the Hoyas boasting a .52 eFG% to Saint Peter's .43 mark. The Hoyas' True Shooting Percentage was also higher, at 57.7%, compared to the Peacocks' 48.7%.
This game marked the first of the season for both teams and serves as a reminder that every matchup is an opportunity to prove oneself. While Georgetown may have emerged victorious, Saint Peter's showed heart and determination in their first outing.
The Hoyas will look to build on this win when they host another non-conference opponent next week.
