Campbell defeats Northeastern 97-82
Campbell Cruises Past Northeastern in Conference Showdown
In a dominant performance, the Campbell University Camels (HOME) edged out visiting Northeastern University Huskies 97-82 on Sunday evening at John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
The home team took control of the game from the outset, building an early lead and never looking back. By halftime, Campbell had established a commanding 49-36 advantage, setting the tone for a decisive victory in conference play.
For DJ Smith, it was a night to remember. The senior guard scored 31 points on 3-9 three-point attempts (58.8% FG) and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Cam Gregory chipped in with five assists and nine points. The balanced attack allowed the Camels to thrive without any single player dominating the game.
Northeastern's Mike Loughnane led the Huskies with 23 points on 66.7% shooting from the field, but his team struggled to contain Campbell's potent offense. The visiting team shot just 53.0% from the field, including a dismal 43.0% three-point attempt.
The Huskies' inability to defend against Campbell's fast break attacks proved costly, as they scored 18 points off turnovers and allowed the Camels to outrebound them 33-22 in total rebounds.
Campbell's victory marked their fourth straight win in conference play, while Northeastern fell to 2-1 on the season. The loss served as a reminder of the importance of consistency in the conference, where margins can be razor-thin.
With the game decided well before its conclusion, the outcome was never in doubt. Campbell's comfortable victory reflected their superior team performance and ability to execute under pressure.
In a battle of wits on the hardwood, Campbell ultimately emerged victorious, showcasing their defensive prowess and balanced attack that left Northeastern reeling.
