Virginia Tech Edges California in Thrilling Conference Showdown
In a back-and-forth affair, Virginia Tech (H) emerged victorious over visiting California with a narrow 78-75 win at the sold-out Cassell Coliseum on Monday night.
The Hokie faithful witnessed an instant classic as both teams traded baskets and neither could gain a clear advantage throughout the contest. At halftime, the score was knotted at 37-37, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.
Amani Hansberry led Virginia Tech in scoring with 15 points, including one three-pointer, while Neoklis Avdalas chipped in with six assists and 11 points off the bench. The Hokies also secured a decisive edge on the glass, grabbing 28 rebounds to California's 31.
On the other side, Dai Dai Ames led the Golden Bears in scoring with 21 points, including two three-pointers made out of five attempts. Lee Dort added seven rebounds and ten points for California.
Virginia Tech's defense proved pivotal, holding California under 50% from the field (25/56 FG) and forcing 13 turnovers to just 10 on their part. The Hokies also shot an impressive 87% from the free-throw line, making 27 out of 31 attempts.
In a testament to the back-and-forth nature of the contest, the largest leads for either team were both six points: Virginia Tech in the third quarter and California in the fourth. In between, the Hokies took a significant eight-point lead with about three minutes remaining but couldn't sustain the advantage.
