Jax State defeats Delaware 64-67
Jax State Edges Delaware in Thrilling 3-Point Shootout
In a back-and-forth affair, Jax State outlasted host Delaware by a mere three points, spoiling the Blue Hens' homecoming on Monday night at Bob Carpenter Center.
The game was a true test of nerves for both teams, with neither able to gain more than an 11-point lead. The largest deficit in either half belonged to Delaware, which trailed 31-36 at halftime.
As the second half got underway, Jax State continued to rely on its outside shooting, going 7-of-20 from beyond the arc compared to Delaware's 11-of-32 attempt. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens' 2-point shooting kept them in the game, as they converted 13 of their 23 attempts.
Despite trailing by as many as three points midway through the second half, Delaware continued to push the action and cut the deficit to within two with just over a minute remaining. However, Jax State's offense stiffened under pressure, converting several crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Blue Hens were led in scoring by a trio of players, each putting up 11 points. Despite the loss, Delaware's 3-point shooting proved to be its strength, accounting for nearly half of their total points (34% of their overall score).
For Jax State, it was the team's ability to limit Delaware's opportunities in the paint that ultimately decided the contest. The Blue Hens managed just 24 points within five feet of the basket, while Jax State's bigs were able to control the glass and force several turnovers.
The win marked a significant test for Jax State, as they now sit atop the conference standings after their first victory over Delaware this season. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Blue Hens back into third place in the conference.
