Morehead St defeats SE Missouri 71-69
Morehead St Edges SE Missouri in Thrilling Comeback Victory
In an instant classic, Morehead St (HOME) pulled off a dramatic comeback victory over visiting SE Missouri (AWAY), 71-69, on Monday night at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
The Roadrunners led by as many as 3 points in the second half, but trailed by just 8 points at halftime. The Eagles' offense was stifled by Morehead St's defense, which held them to 38% shooting and forced 5 turnovers. Meanwhile, Davion Cunningham (35 pts) and Jon Carroll (9 reb, 6 pts) led the charge on the glass for the home team.
However, SE Missouri refused to give up. The Eagles cut their deficit to just 2 points with less than a minute remaining, forcing Morehead St's Chase Dawson into a crucial defensive stop. On the ensuing possession, Braxton Stacker (10 pts, 6 reb) made a key rebounding play on a missed free throw, allowing the Roadrunners to clear out the clock and secure their comeback victory.
The Eagles' offense was sparked by Brendan Terry (13 pts), who hit 100% from the field but struggled with his shot attempt count. BJ Ward's 10 points also helped keep SE Missouri in the game, as the senior guard made several key baskets down the stretch.
Morehead St outrebounded SE Missouri 30-24 and committed just 12 turnovers to the Eagles' 5. The Roadrunners' defense was also stifling, holding the Eagles to just 42% shooting and forcing them to miss several crucial shots in the final minutes.
In a game that will be remembered for years to come, Morehead St's comeback victory marked their first win over an unranked opponent this season. With the Roadrunners now on a 2-game winning streak, they'll look to keep their momentum going when they take on rival Eastern Kentucky next week.
