Wyoming Falls Short at The Pit
The University of New Mexico men's basketball team dominated their Mountain West Conference opponents, the University of Wyoming Cowboys, 78-58 on Tuesday night at The Pit.
In what was essentially a statement win for the Lobos, they asserted their dominance from start to finish. New Mexico took an early lead and never looked back, outscoring Wyoming by 17 points in the first half. The largest leads of the game were held by the home team, with New Mexico leading by as much as 24 points midway through the second half.
Tomislav Buljan led the way for the Lobos, scoring 25 points on an efficient 84.6% shooting night from the field. He also contributed 12 rebounds and a steal. Deyton Albury chipped in with seven assists, four points, and two rebounds.
For Wyoming, Leland Walker scored 14 points but struggled to find his range, going 1-4 on three-point attempts. Gavin Gores led the Cowboys in rebounding with six boards and eight points.
New Mexico's offense was balanced, shooting 47% from the field while holding Wyoming to just 40%. The Lobos outrebounded their opponents 20-18 and committed fewer turnovers (9) than the Cowboys (13).
The win gives New Mexico a significant boost in conference standings, but more importantly, it serves as a statement of intent for the team. With several ranked teams still to play, this win will likely have implications come tournament time.
The Cowboys, on the other hand, struggled to contain the Lobos' offense and were unable to mount a late surge. Wyoming's 22.0 turnover ratio made it difficult for them to create scoring opportunities.
In a game that was never in doubt, New Mexico proved they are a force to be reckoned with in Mountain West Conference play.
