Seattle U defeats Washington St 69-55
Seattle U Edges Out Washington St in Conference Showdown at Climate Pledge Arena
The Seattle University Redhawks (H) took down the visiting Washington State Cougars 69-55 on Wednesday night, handing them their first conference loss of the season.
Despite being the road team, Washington St's poor shooting and inability to contain Seattle U's offense led to a convincing win for the home crowd. The Huskies' struggles in the paint were particularly notable, as they scored just 24 points within the restricted area compared to Seattle U's 18.
Ace Glass led the way for Washington St with 13 points, but his teammates struggled to find their rhythm on offense. Emmanuel Ugbo provided some spark off the bench with 5 points and 7 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cougars' shooting woes.
Seattle U's Brayden Maldonado was the star of the show for the Redhawks, scoring a career-high 15 points on 3-6 three-point shooting. The junior guard also grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 3 assists in a well-rounded performance.
The game was never particularly close, with Seattle U building a 14-point lead in the second half that Washington St couldn't overcome. The Cougars' 19 turnovers ultimately proved to be their downfall, as they committed just 11 against the Redhawks.
In terms of advanced statistics, Seattle U's true shooting percentage (59.5%) and free throw rate (53.2%) were significantly higher than Washington St's (37.1% and 35.9%, respectively). The Redhawks also outrebounded their opponents 28-54 and committed just 11 turnovers to the Cougars' 19.
The win keeps Seattle U's hopes for a conference title alive, while handing Washington St its first loss in the Pac-12 this season.
