Georgetown defeats Coppin St 97-67
Coppin State Edged by Georgetown in 30-Point Blowout
In a dominating performance, the Georgetown Hoyas cruised past visiting Coppin State Eagles 97-67 at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night.
The Hoyas took control from the outset, leading 53-25 at halftime and never looked back. The difference was as large as 36 points at one point in the second half, showcasing the significant gap between these two teams.
For Georgetown, Julius Halaifonua led the charge with 20 points on an impressive 77.8% shooting clip. He also chipped in eight rebounds to round out a strong all-around performance for the big man.
Meanwhile, Coppin State struggled to find its footing, particularly from beyond the arc where they shot just 36% (8/22). Khali Horton led the way with 18 points on an efficient 50% shooting percentage, but his team couldn't overcome the Hoyas' stifling defense.
Georgetown's balanced attack was evident in their comprehensive statistics. The team shot a crisp 55.0% from the field and made 71.0% of their free throws, while limiting Coppin State to just 41.0% shooting and forcing 14 turnovers.
The Hoyas' fast break points were a key factor in their victory, with 20 such opportunities yielding 21 points off turnovers. This metric highlighted Georgetown's ability to capitalize on their opponents' mistakes.
In contrast, Coppin State struggled to create scoring opportunities, particularly in the paint where they scored just 24 points. The Eagles' poor three-point shooting (36.0%) further exacerbated their struggles.
This non-conference matchup may have lacked postseason significance, but it still served as a statement win for Georgetown. As they continue their season, the Hoyas will look to build on this convincing victory against stiffer competition.
