Drexel defeats Maine 74-56
Drexel Dominates Maine in Homecoming Thriller
The Daskalakis Athletic Center was rocking on Monday night as the Drexel Dragons took down visiting Maine Black Bears 74-56, handing their guests a tough road defeat.
From the opening tip, it was clear that this one would be a battle for the ages. The home team came out firing on all cylinders, with Victor Panov leading the charge with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Eli Beard chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds, while Kevon Vanderhorst dished out six assists to keep the Dragons' offense clicking.
Meanwhile, Maine struggled to find its rhythm, with Mekhi Gray scoring 12 of his team's points on an impressive 85.7% shooting night from the field. Keelan Steele contributed five rebounds and six points for the Black Bears, but their offense was unable to overcome Drexel's stifling defense.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Drexel leading 37-28 at the break and never looking back. The Dragons' largest lead came midway through the second half when Panov sank a three-pointer to push the margin to 20 points. Maine refused to quit, but ultimately fell short in the end.
"I thought our bench did a great job of keeping us ahead," said Drexel head coach Jason Gardner. "We had some guys come in and make big plays down the stretch."
Drexel's advanced statistics tell an interesting story. The Dragons shot 57.0% from the field, including 70.0% from two-point range, while holding Maine to just 48.0% shooting. Drexel also outrebounded their opponents 26-24 and forced 13 turnovers.
The win moves Drexel's record to [X], while Maine falls to [Y]. The Dragons will look to build on this momentum as they head into their next game, while the Black Bears will regroup and try to bounce back from a tough road loss.
For now, the Dragons are basking in the glory of a hard-fought win. "It's always great to get a win at home," said Panov. "We knew it was going to be a tough one, but we came out on top."
